Music for the Media
Music for the Media's technical requirements are really the minimum you would need to do the job in the real world.
That means a computer based sequencer capable of importing Quicktime movies plus enough instruments, virtual or otherwise, to record a demo of your music.
Remember also that enrolled students qualify for substantial educational discounts, particularly on software, so before you gear up and splash out - wait and talk to us first!

The Computer
Absolute minimum:
PC: Intel/AMD Processor 1.4GHz,
1GB RAM, DVD drive
or Mac: Power Mac G4 1GHz,
1GB RAM, DVD drive
Recommended (life is a lot easier with better computers):
PC: Pentium 4 2GHz (or equivalent),
2GB RAM, DVD drive
or Mac: G5 1.8GHz or any G5 or Intel Mac,
2GB RAM, DVD drive
Software
A computer based sequencer capable of importing QuickTime movies.
These includes:
Cubase SE3, SL and SX
Logic Pro and Express
Digital Performer
Sonar/Cakewalk
Other Musical Equipment
You need enough instruments, virtual instruments, modules or live instruments to record a reasonable demo. This means a sound card, MIDI keyboard, mixer and monitors.
Internet Access
You must have access to the internet. To upload assignments, broadband is a big advantage although we have plenty of students on dial up connections. We need an active email address that can receive emails from us
Musical Knowledge
This is not an entry level course. Most students have at least 12 months experience of making music. You do not need to read or write music. About half our students can and the rest can't. It doesn't appear to make any significant difference to the success rate. You need to be able to create a piece of music and record it with reasonable fluency.
Technical Knowledge
You need a basic understanding of how your sequencer works and be able to record a demo as an audio file in your computer sequencing environment. Media music is increasingly techie and so this is unavoidable I'm afraid.
Time
The course represents a significant commitment of time. Given a minimum of 2 hours a week, most students complete a unit every month. Some take much longer and others work very quickly. You have up to 12 months to complete the course. After that, you can pay an extension fee to extend your course.
Educational Discounts and Prices
All our recommended hardware and software is available through our educational equipment partner Music Village Education. So check out the prices at http://www.mveducation.com.
Remember however that only enrolled students are eligible for preferential pricing and our suppliers require confirmation in writing of student status from us.
